Weekly Update – April 1, 2019

This is Bill Pitcock, Principal of Westlane Middle School with the Westlane Wildcat Weekly Message.

-Starting this week, we are piloting a Drop 2 Schedule.  The Drop 2 schedule has students taking six of their eight classes each day, dropping two classes each day.  The classes will be 53 minutes in length.  There are two reasons we are doing this: first, Northview and Eastwood has success with it.  Second, Northview is running the schedule in 2019-20.  I want to make sure that our students that are going to Northview next year have exposure to it.  Our students and teachers have been planning for the change since before Spring Break.  Here are some things you are going to need to know:

The Bell Schedule for the Drop 2 can be found here – https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dDWZOtf7TjuePfTBxxKWO4ZGXaiDOH80XUKLU3AEscg/edit?usp=sharing

Students will experience different classes each day as they come about.  It takes four days to go from period 1 at the start and end at period 8.  Here is what it looks like on the four days:

Day 1 – Advisory, then classes 123456

Day 2 – Advisory, then classes 781234

Day 3 – Advisory, then classes 567812

Day 4 – Advisory, then classes 345678

Our students will receive a sheet each Monday that has their weekly schedule on it.  Lunches are also based on the class they have during the third class each day.  Students will still report to Advisory.  I will also tell you each day in our weekly update and you can see our long-term calendar here – https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FQ4IORe84LuglNdPA1WQkMDDqdcZzga9t6fV8H7UG2o/edit?usp=sharing

-If you have any questions about the schedule or classes, please email me in response to this message.

-Speaking of long-term schedule– I know that many of you are making appointments for students for April and May.  We will be testing for ILEARN and NWEA from 9:30-11:30 AM on April 23-25, April 30-May 3, and May 7-8.  Please limit appointments during this time.

-This is a reminder for all of our students that get dropped off – Students may not exit cars until 9:00 AM.  If you have set up a meeting with a teacher, then the teacher will let you in.

-As part of our IXL and reading push, we are having weekly challenges for students to show they “Excel at IXL” and read 20 minutes an evening.  Students will receive a slip each Monday and when they work on IXL Diagnostic and their wall or read 20 minutes during the evening, parents can sign their slip.  We will collect the slips each Monday.  Mr. Thiems has put together a video of how to do Diagnostic IXL here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB9jyp2ERrE&feature=youtu.be

-Please visit wl.msdwt.k12.in.us for all things Westlane.  Our Parent Corner has a wealth of information on it for all parents – including an updated Long Term Calendar, lunch menus and renovation updates.

– PTO will be collecting school supplies in order to donate to our TERRIFIC teaching staff. Students who bring supplies in will receive a free slushee on Thursday, March 21st or Thursday, April 4th during their assigned lunch periods. Ask your advisory teacher for a brown paper bag to put your supplies in and complete the form attached to the bag. All supplies must be submitted to Mrs. Richmond in the bookstore. Know that all school supplies should be brand new.   Please contribute if you are able to do so.  Bags are also available at Ms. Clarkson’s desk.

-I am often asked how each parent and guardian can support students academically at home.  I would like to share with you two main activities in which students can grow academically outside of school.  The first is Reading for at least 20 minutes a night.  Reading for 20 minutes a night can increase vocabulary, brain and language development, and can even increase test scores.  The second way students can grow academically is by practicing 20-25 minutes a night on IXL.  IXL is a Reading and Math online practice program.  The website for IXL can be found at https://www.ixl.com/signin/msdwtownship.  Each student already has a login for this program.  Our Math and Language and Literature teachers use this program to practice skills in class and out of class, but we also know there may be concepts that students need help on outside of class.  Students should practice in the diagnostic area and the skill area.
