Weekly Update – March 17, 2019

This is Bill Pitcock, Principal of Westlane Middle School with the Westlane Wildcat Weekly Message.

-The “Greatest Night in Literacy and Math” is coming up on Tuesday, March 19 from 6-8 PM.  Our Literacy and Math Carnival is free fun for the entire family.  We hope to see you there. The Spring Book Fair is also open this week.  You can order online at https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=westlanemiddleschool1 – the Book Fair is also open during our Literacy and Math Carnival.

Ms. A’Lelia Bundles, an alumna of Westlane and a Hall of Fame Inductee at North Central High School, is coming to Westlane for a visit.  Ms. Bundles is the great-great granddaughter of Madam C. J. Walker and she is the consultant on the upcoming NETFLIX film about Madam C. J. Walker.  If a student would like to attend the author visit on April 15th, they are to read her book about Madam C.J. Walker.  Students are able to pick up a free copy of the book at the bookstore, but must commit to reading it before the visit.  Students should listen for announcements as to when the books will be available at the bookstore the week of March 18th through March 22.  Space and books are limited so first come first serve.

-As part of our IXL and reading push, we are having weekly challenges for students to show they “Excel at IXL” and read 20 minutes an evening.  The challenges will go from Friday to Friday.  Students will receive a slip each Friday and when they work on IXL Diagnostic and their wall or read 20 minutes during the evening, parents can sign their slip.  We will collect the slips each Friday.  Mr. Thiems has put together a video of how to do Diagnostic IXL here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB9jyp2ERrE&feature=youtu.be

-Please visit wl.msdwt.k12.in.us for all things Westlane.  Our Parent Corner has a wealth of information on it for all parents – including an updated Blue/White Calendar, lunch menus and renovation updates.

-Each day next week, our PTO will be collecting school supplies in order to donate to our TERRIFIC teaching staff. Students who bring supplies in will receive a free slushee on Thursday, March 21st or Thursday, April 4th during their assigned lunch periods. Ask your advisory teacher for a brown paper bag to put your supplies in and complete the form attached to the bag. All supplies must be submitted to Mrs. Richmond in the bookstore. Know that all school supplies should be brand new.   Please contribute if you are able to do so.  Bags are also available at Ms. Clarkson’s desk.

-Right after Spring Break, Westlane will be piloting a Drop 2 schedule that the other two middle schools in the district have been running.  They have been having success with this schedule and we are going to try it out.  We will be working with students this week in Advisory to examine the schedule and change.  I will be sending out a separate phone message and email next week that will deal specifically with the schedule, as well as posting documents on our website.

-Speaking of the schedule after Spring Break – I know that many of you are making appointments for students for April and May.  We will be testing for ILEARN and NWEA from 9:30-11:30 AM on April 23-25, April 30-May 3, and May 7-8.  Please limit appointments during this time.

Westlane Middle School is an International Baccalaureate World School and an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction.  The mission of Westlane Middle School is to provide a safe, inclusive environment where children develop and demonstrate proficiency in academic, social, and life skills.  The faculty and staff of Westlane Middle School encourage the entire Westlane school community to participate in this process.
